Joe's Weekly Notes & Observations

Week 11

Please note that the weekly expanded player rankings PDF that I have been sending out on Wednesdays will now be posted on homepage of the website in Weeks 11-13.

Power 5 +ND

  • Pitt RB Darrin Hall will go into a Week 12 matchup having topped 100 yards rushing in three consecutive games and has scored eight touchdowns during that streak.
  • I recommended benching Stanford RB Bryce Love and that probably hurt some fantasy owners given that Love finished with 166 rushing yards and three TDs.  He was dinged up going into a matchup against Washington.  In fact, he had 45 yards and a TD at the half, and was limping so bad, he seemed questionable to play in the second half.  What would have happened had he not returned?  That is the risk you take with an injured player.
  • Boston College RB AJ Dillon has carried the ball at least 33 times in three of the past four games.
  • Oklahoma State’s defense has given up 39 points in three consecutive games, but it’s difficult to imagine Kansas State scoring that many against the Cowboys next week.
  • Ohio State RB JK Dobbins had 124 rushing yards on 18 carries, while Mike Weber was the better fantasy producer, running for 162 yards and 2 TDs on just nine carries.  Hopefully, many of you took my advice weeks ago and traded they guys because the 2-back system at OSU has been nothing but a headache in 2017.
  • Saquon Barkley’s fantasy owners were expecting him to run up some big numbers against Rutgers, but his 48 total yards from scrimmage, likely gift-wrapped the Heisman trophy to Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield.
  • Need a sleeper back next week?  South Carolina plays Wofford and Mon Denson could be your guy.  Against Florida, Denson had 61 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.
  • LSU WR DJ Chark is quietly having a solid second half of 2017.  Chark has topped 100 yards receiving in three of the past five games.
  • Texas Tech WR TJ Vasher has caught a TD pass in three of the past four games.
  • Baylor WR Denzel Mims has topped 120 yards receiving in five of his last seven games.
  • After topping 100 yards receiving in three of the first four games of 2017, Virginia Tech WR Cam Phillips has only topped 100 yards once in the past six games and has been held to less than 40 yards three times in those six games.
  • Syracuse WR Steve Ishmael has caught at least 11 passes in a game five times this season.  QB Eric Dungey dressed for the game, but did not play, which clearly affected a lot of fantasy outcomes this week.
  • In Wake Forest’s 64-43 win at Syracuse, the Deacons had a 350-yard passer, two 100-yard rushers, and three 100-yard receivers.
  • Clemson RB Travis Etienne has scored a TD in seven of nine games this year.
  • For the second consecutive week, Michgan RB Chris Evans scored two rushing TDs.
  • West Virginia RB Justin Crawford started the year with five consecutive 100 yard games.  After failing to run for at least 50 yards in three consecutive games following his five-game streak, Crawford has bounced back with back-to-back 100 yard games in the past two weeks.
  • A lot of so-called experts are dogging Wisconsin for their strength of schedule, but they are beating teams that have beaten other good teams.  The lack of respect is likely the reason why freshman RB Jonathan Taylor is not receiving any Heisman consideration, but the kid has been a stud.
  • Auburn RB Kerryon Johnson may not be scoring as frequently as he was in the beginning of the year, but he has totaled more than 150 yards of offense in four of the past five games and scored at least one TD in each of those games.
  • Kentucky RB Benny Snell has rushed for three touchdowns in three consecutive games.
  • Vanderbilt RB Ralph Webb has scored at least 1 TD in four of the past five games.
  • I hope many of you took my advice on Texas A&M WR Christian Kirk, 120 yards receiving and 2 TDs (1 rec., 1 ret.).
  • Missouri QB Drew Lock has thrown at least 3 TD passes in six consecutive games.  RB Ish Witter has scored a TD in three of the last four games.
  • Oklahoma RB Rodney Anderson has topped the 100-yard mark in four consecutive games and has scored 10 TDs in the past five games.  QB Baker Mayfield is finishing strong and stating his case for the Heisman, accounting for at least four TDs in four consecutive games.
  • UCLA has allowed a 100-yard rusher in every game this year and twelve 100-yard rushers in eleven games this season.  That is a good thing for owners of Ronald Jones this week.
  • Arizona QB Khalil Tate is averaging 11.6 yards per carry and has rushed for at least 137 yards in every game since taking over as the starting quarterback.

G5 + Indep.

  • Miami (OH) QB Gus Ragland returned and threw 3 TD passes.  Next week, Miami (OH) hosts Eastern Michigan.
  • Buffalo starting RB Emmanuel Reed was benched after his second fumble in Tuesday’s game against Bowling Green.  Reed was up to 43 rushing yards and a touchdown before his fumble at the goaline.  His backup, Theo Anderson, finished with 133 yards and a touchdown, and now owners will be left to wonder if Reed will lose the starting job heading into Week 12.
  • Toledo RB Terry Swanson left Thursday’s game at Ohio with a leg injury, so his availability for next week’s game may be in doubt.
  • Western Michigan RB Jarvion Franklin has now topped 100 yards rushing in six of his last seven games and has scored ten touchdowns in the past seven games.
  • In the past three games, Central Michigan RB Jonathan Ward has averaged 122 rushing yards and scored five touchdowns.
  • Just when I was singing the late-season praises of Appalachian State RB Jalin Moore on last week’s show, he sat out Thursday’s game against Georgia Southern, and I missed it because I was doing the Week 11 live Youtube show.  And yes, even I started him in one of my four leagues.
  • BYU RB Squally Canada ran for 213 yards and a TD in BYU’s win at UNLV.  Canada has now scored in three consecutive games and the Cougars play UMass next week.
  • Army RB Darnell Woolfolk only has one 100-yard game this year, but he has scored at least one touchdown in six of seven games.
  • The million-dollar question this week will be whether or not Navy QB Zach Abey returns, and if not, will RB Malcolm Perry’s position designation change.  If not, Perry could change the balance of the playoff bracket.
  • One week after rushing for 68 yards and a touchdown against UTEP, converted LB Tavares Martin carried the ball 29 times for 195 yards and 2 TDs in a 35-21 win at Charlotte.
  • Florida Atlantic RB Devin Singletary has scored 2 or more TDs in seven consecutive games.
  • Marshal RB Tyler King has scored a TD in four of Marshall’s past five games and topped the 100-yard mark for the third time this year against Western Kentucky.
  • UAB RB Spencer Brown has topped 125 yards rushing in five of the past six games.
  • Since October 6th, Boise State RB Alexander Mattison has totaled over 130 yards of offense in five of the past six games.
  • Colorado State RB Dalyn Dawkins has topped 120 yards on the ground in six of the past seven games.
